Can you believe the ski season is already winding down? This is my fourth year as a member of the North Bay Nordic Jr Ski Team. Our team competed this year at the Ontario Cup races in Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Onaping, and the Winter Games in Huntsville, as well as OFSAA, and the Midget championships this past weekend in Midland. As I look back on the 2010 ski season I remember everything from two athlete injuries at the Easterns to Nadine Perron’s gold medal sprint in Onaping, and to my OFSAA gold. It has been a busy and rewarding season, and the North Bay team brought home many medals. Four of our ten athletes have just been named to the Ontario Development Team. This team is made up of the top 44 racers age 14 and over in Ontario. This is quite an accomplishment for such a small team. Our midgets are also some of the best in the province, and represented the North Bay club on the podium at every race.
The success of the North Bay Nordic Junior Race Team has been so impressive over the years, that I notice we are well recognized wherever we travel. Our enthusiastic (noisy) parents are also well known.
I am excited to be travelling with 4 other teammates - Nadine Perron, Liam Patterson, Scott Hill and Courtney Hill - to the Canadian National Championships in Whitehorse Mar12-22. Dave Nighbor will be in Whitehorse, as well as some Olympic Team members that I hope to meet.
As a member of the North Bay Nordic Junior Race Team, I would like to thank the North Bay Nordic Ski Club for their ongoing support. The club supports our team generously with a yearly contribution, which is being increased next year. The club also allows us to run fundraisers, such as the annual Steak and Ski, the ski exchange, and the snack bar for cross country events off season. The cost of being part of the Ski Team would be significantly more without this help from the club. Also thanks to our many sponsors that are listed on the club website, and team wall. Thanks to all the parents for their huge fundraising efforts, including the Perron’s Unique Socks. Also thanks to the coaches Bob Porter, Toivo Koivukoski, Sera Tempio, and John Patterson for spending so much time coaching the team, and to Dave Nighbor, for developing our training schedule. Also thanks to my dad for his hours organizing team travel etc.
I feel that being part of this team is great for the development of young athletes from North Bay and I would encourage young skiers or parents to contact the coaches if they are interested in joining.
Now I have to go wax my skis for Whitehorse. Wish our team good luck!
